Reclamation of lands of Isfara – Lyakkan Valley, Tajikistan

On 18 October Transboundary Water Management in Central Asia Programme office in Tajikistan signed a contract with “Fayzi Farhod” Construction Company to implement the Pilot Project “Reclamation of lands of Isfara – Lyakkan Valley” in Soughd province of Tajikistan.

Current condition of this area is characterized by high level of ground waters, which makes it impossible to plant many common cultures, but sunflowers. Even apricot orchards, which are considered to be able to withstand high water levels are drying out in this area...

Тashkent hosted the fifth meeting of the regional organizations

September 4-5, 2017, Tashkent hosted the fifth meeting of the regional organizations involved in sustainable development and water resources management in Central Asia. The meeting was organized by CAREC and Scientific Information Centre of the Interstate Coordination Water Commission of Central Asia (SIC ICWC) with the support of the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) under the project “Strengthening capacities of regional, national and local level institutions and sustaining the experiences gained in the previous phases”. Oslo Forum: the Experience of MRC

September 4-6, with support of EU and GIZ Oslo Forum (Norway) hosting partners from Uzbekistan. Jointly organized by MRC, GIZ GmbH and Multiconsult, the first Oslo Forum taking into account of what has been developed, and is under development in the Mekong region. The Forum draw on similar sustainability initiatives internationally, specifically those related to sustainable hydropower development within the context of sound water resources management, and cater for extended dialogue between organizations and people working on this.

The Central Asian International Ecological Forum is held in Turkmenistan

The State Committee for Environmental Protection and Land Resources of Turkmenistan and the Central Asian Regional Environmental Centre (CAREC) have organized an international forum “Initiative for cooperation in environmental protection and sustainable development in Central Asia”, which took place in Ashgabat City from 5 to 7 June 2017.

Progress Report on Implementation of the Isfara River Basin Plan in Kyrgyzstan

Implemented Activities

Isfara Basin Plan (BP) was finalised and published in spring 2014. The BP consists of detailed description of the Isfara River Basin, which was prepared by local experts, covering such aspects as geographic and socio-economic conditions in the basin, potential climate change patterns, water infrastructure, irrigated areas, etc...

Kyzylorda. 2-3 March 2017. XVIII Meeting of the Aral-Syrdarya Basin Council

XVIII meeting of the Aral-Syrdarya Basin Council is to take place on 2 and 3 March 2017 in Kyzylorda.

The key issues discussed during the meeting on 2 March:

  • Water allocation and water limits for irrigation in South Kazakhstan region and Kyzylorda region. Decisions were adopted and recommendations made for the government regulation rules for Shardara reservoir and Koksarai counter controller;
  • Analytical report on deterioration of several water quality parameters in the Syrdarya river in the section from Shymkent to Kyzylorda on the territory of Kazakhstan was presented and discussed;
  • A proposal was made to extend the territory of Barsakelmes...

Sharing experience in the implementation of water saving technologies and improving water accounting

In order to improve water management plans, in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources and the GEF agency, a workshop was organised on the topic “Sharing experience in the implementation of water saving technologies and improving water accounting”. The workshop is aimed at demonstrating the water saving technologies and methodologies used in Uzbekistan and consists of two parts:

Tashkent. 10 March 2017. Working Meeting of BWO “Amudarya” and BWO “Syrdarya” Ecexutives

The meeting is taking place in the framework of the EU Project “Support to further strengthening of regional cooperation on water management in Central Asia through capacity building for BWO Amudarya and BWO Syrdarya and their branch offices”. In the course of the meeting it is planned to discuss joint activities for development of a unified reporting format of the Basin Water Organisations to the Interstate Commission for Water Coordination.

Discussion of future water cadaster of Uzbekistan in Vienne

From 1 to 3 February 2017, the Programme organized a working meeting in Vienna (Austria) hosted by the Austrian Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt). Geographic Information System (GIS) specialists from Uzbekistan, Austria and the Partner organization CREA/Italy are discussing technical specifications for a future water cadaster of Uzbekistan. The guests from Uzbekistan will also study best European practice on data management and will exchange experience with their counterparts.
