On March 30, the Steering Committee of the Programme on Water Governance in Uzbekistan met for the first time in Tashkent with participation of high-ranking representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources, the EU Delegation, and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH as well as the members of the National Working Group representing all water-related national organisations and the Heads of the Basin Irrigation Systems Administrations of the six programme pilot regions (Andijan, Fergana, Namangan, Syrdarya, Kashkadarya and Surkhandarya). The Programme’s partners – International Water Management Institute (IWMI), the Italian Council for Economy in Agriculture (CREA) and the Austrian Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt – UBA) reported on their contributions to the programme. H.E Ambassador Eduards Stiprais, head of the European Union Delegation to Uzbekistan and Mr. Torsten Brezina, GIZ Country Director in Uzbekistan, welcomed the meeting participants and emphasised the importance of modern and efficient water resources management for the socio-economic development of any given country, including Uzbekistan.
At the meeting the achievements of 2016 and the work plan for 2017 were presented, as well as pilot river basins in Andijan and Kashkadarya were agreed.
