Climate and Flow Prediction in Small River Basins of Central Asia: Expert Meetings in Ashgabat

Climate and Flow Prediction in Small River Basins of Central Asia: Expert Meetings in Ashgabat

Climate and Flow Prediction in Small River Basins of Central Asia: Expert Meetings in AshgabatASHGABAT – This week (14-18 January 2013) Introductory Meetings on Climate and Flow Prediction in Small River Basins of Central Asia have taken place in the framework of the EU-funded action “Water Management and Basin Organisations in Central Asia (WMBOCA)”, implemented by programme of Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.
Nominated experts from Turkmen and Kyrgyz partner water management organisations, German scientists from University of Wuerzburg and representatives of the GIZ Transboundary Water Management in Central Asia Pro- gramme have discussed theoretical approach and practical solutions on climate change and flow prediction in Central Asia, namely, in Isfara and Murgab river basins.
Projection of air temperature, precipitation and available flow for the year 2050 in the Isfara and Murgab river basins are objectives of the works on the climate change issue. The projection will be based on suitable models from the International Panel of Climate Change (IPCC). Consideration of consequences for Central Asia will be in focus of the experts’ attention and their further work. Another important objective is preparation of methodolo- gy for the prediction of climate and flow changes in small Central Asian basins.
Besides of the above-mentioned climate change meetings in Turkmenistan, GIZ Transboundary Water Man- agement in Central Asia Programme conducted technical trainings on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for specialists of water management organisations in Murgab river basin (in the city of Mary, Turkmenistan) and purchased GIS equipment for partner organisations as means of technical support. All these activities have been implemented in the framework of the EU-funded action “Water Management and Basin Organisations in Central Asia (WMBOCA)”.
“Water Management and Basin Organisations in Central Asia (WMBOCA)” is funded by the European Union and implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH acting in partnership with the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC). Budget of WMBOCA consists of approx- imately €2 million provided by the European Union and approximately €0.5 million provided by the German Fed- eral Foreign office.
